At contract time, the International Union, UAW stands up (or sits down across the table) on behalf of some 390,000 active members and more than 600,000 retirees. The UAW (officially the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America), represents workers at large and small companies, universities, and state agencies. The union has about 3,100 contracts with some 2,000 employers in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Along with negotiating wages, benefits, and working conditions, the UAW provides education and training programs for its members, who belong to about 800 local unions. The organization was founded in Detroit in 1935.
