The Plum Island Animal Disease Center helps protect us from classical swine fever and other viruses. The organization conducts research to detect and identify foreign animal disease (FAD) agents, as well as develops ways to control disease epidemics. The Plum Island Animal Disease Center also determines risks of importing animal and animal products, investigates FAD outbreaks in livestock, and tests imports. In addition, the center produces reagents used in diagnostic tests and vaccines, as well as trains animal health professionals. The Plum Island Animal Disease Center is part of the US Department of Agriculture.
