RAG Aktiengesellschaft, Germany's largest coal producer, boasts mining operations that are managed through coal and coke company Deutsche Steinkohle. RAG operates seven coal mines and a coking facility, all in Germany. It sells its products to power stations, the iron and steel industry, and the heat market. After whittling itself down to just its coal operations, RAG is now controlled by the state-run RAG Foundation. The German government announced in 2007 that economic and environment conditions in the country made continuation of coal mining infeasible. To this end, the German coal industry will cease operations by 2018.
