About Iranian Rial
The rial is the official currency of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is subdivided into 100 dinars, but due to the rial's low purchasing power the dinar is not practically used. While POS terminals are in use in Iran, the country does not participate in any of the major international card networks due to sanctions between it and the United States. Travelers are instead advised to load money onto a local prepaid card account.
As of the 2020s, a prepaid financial product known as the Iran Tourist Debit Card has become available for foreign visitors. Issued in partnership with Iranian banks such as Pasargad, the card allows tourists to load funds in foreign currencies such as U.S. dollars or euros, which are converted to Iranian rials upon issuance. The card operates on the national Shetab banking network and can be used at ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, restaurants, hotels, and retail shops across the country. It offers features such as encrypted transactions, PIN security, and online or in-person top-up options. Wikipedia
