Target Corporation is an American retail corporation headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Established in 1902 as Dayton Dry Goods Company, it introduced the Target store format in 1962. The first Target store opened in Roseville, Minnesota, and the company was renamed Target Corporation in 2000. As of 2025, Target operates 1,981 stores across the United States and employs approximately 440,000 people. It is the seventh-largest retailer in the U.S. and a component of the S&P 500 Index. Target is known for offering upscale, trend-forward merchandise at affordable prices, with its iconic red bullseye logo and mascot, Bullseye the dog. The company also operates two criminal forensics laboratories. In 2015, Target ceased operations in Canada, and it has no current international presence.
