Don't buy, wait till yen falls. Or short the yen (FXY). It will fall
very badly!

Timuruma,

Can you explain about the yen falling?  Are you saying that if the yen
falls, the value of Japanese-run firms like Honda will depreciate as
well?  Sorry if this sounds really naive, but I'm not entirely clear
on the relationship between currency valuation and company strength.

I like Honda at just under $20.  I have been watching them for a
while, and they've been trading between about $18.75 and $23 for a
while now.  They are edging into Ford's Chinese play and they're fleet
of smaller, reliable, more fuel-efficient vehicles puts them in a
strong position, esp. when oil prices inch back up.

Their motorcycle division is really struggling, but long-term this is
a good value play.

HMC is a buy. Look for it to lead the pack with its gas efficient
cars.

It is a good buy here. But you still need to use stop loss to protect
your investment. Here are 2 simple ways to do it   http://tinyurl.com/6vfqoq
Buying puts/calls is another method.

This is a decent stock to trade up and down. seems it cant hold a
rally. I should have shorted it friday... but didn't  because I hate
shorting stocks that I believe in. Honda falls into that category.

I am long HMC.

Thanks

To answer Drud's question on effect of Yen on HMC stock,
HMC is based in japan and hence reports its income in Yen, not dollar.
However, 60% of HMC's world-wide sales are from US, ie gets its US
sales equivalent in US dollars.
So, ultimately what Yen numbers does these dollars covert to, will
depend on USD-Yen exchange rates.
So, stronger the Yen against Dollar, more will be the erosion of HMC's
US income. Hence will affect its stock as well.

You may also note that US income projection from sales, and
additionally the pricing on the new honda models sold in US (eg 2010
insight), will be based on company's assumption of a projected
estimate of average exchange rate over a period of time. So, over that
period of time, if Yen is stronger than the company's projected
average, (and assuming sales are as projected), honda will see erosion
of projected income. During the same period, on the other hand, if the
Yen comes out weaker than projected, honda gains.

Given this, you can easily see the effect of USD-Yen exchange rates on
HMC stock. The same holds good for companies like Nissan and Toyota
which also depend hugely on US market.
