Subject: 32000 Open Interest in 200 Calls expiring today. Expect upwards push this afternoon.
I note there are at time of writing that there is Open Interest in
over 32,000 Nov 2009 200 Calls.  These expire at close of market
today.  Whilst the short side has had momentum and pressure over the
last couple of days, I would expect to see some sustained buying
activity to push the share price over the 200 strike at some point
during the remainder of today.

I have myself just bought a purely speculative intraday position
in .APVKT.  If it does not get over 200, then it's a few dollars
lost.  If there is a rally to 200.45-ish or over, then there's money
to be made.

The above statement reflects pricing at time of transaction.  Pricing
will change with market movements.  Such movements will be amplified
by effects of time value decay in options near to expiration and/or
other factors.  The above is intended solely as a statement of my own
investment strategy and/or trading tactics.  It is not intended, not
should it be construed as, a recommendation to buy or sell any
particular security.

Update 1pm.  Just gone over 200.  Shows sign of some support at this
level: dipped back into the 199.95s, but recovering to 200 again.
The next 60 minutes are crucial.

useful definition yet

it seems we may see cross currents of mm's trying to expire at $200,
and Funds looking for an entry point to get long (knowing this is
manipulated price drop, that they should take advantage of.

Per Ardua,
Those expire today. Won't you have to sell them by the end of the day
and won't the time decay remove most of the value?
What did you buy them at? (if you care to say.) Just curious about
what margin looks attractive to you.
Just seems like a lot of risk for a possible few dollars per contract
(Although I admit I do not have a trading mindset and I'm not terribly
sophisticated when it comes to options.)
thnx.

Definition of Open Interest & associated terms.  (Source:
OptionsXpress glossary; others offer substantively similar
definitions).

Open Interest
The number of contracts, either long or short, traded on a
particular option that have not been offset by a closing transaction.
A closing transaction lowers open interest while an opening
transaction increases open interest.

Opening Transaction
A trade that creates a new position or adds to an existing one.
The new position can consist of either short or long options or
stock.

Closing Transaction
The purchase or sale of an option that offsets an existing open
position. For example, if your first trade is to buy an option, that
contract is considered open and is factored into the open interest
until you sell it. Likewise, if you sold the contract as your opening
trade, you would have an open, short position until you bought the
contract in a closing transaction.

It just means the number of contracts at that price. i.e. 200/share
i.e. In Per Aruda's example, there at 32,000 contracts various people
are holding and hoping that the price will rise above 200/share at OE
(today).
However: The people hoping for a rise in stock price have bought calls
and those betting that the stock price will fall have probably sold
calls. Both are counted in the OI.
I personally would not put much credence in the number of calls open
unless a big block was recently purchaced. But that is me!!
Hope it stays above 200 as I have sold a significant number of Puts at
that strike.
Best of Luck.

krispykarim, It's the total number of open option contracts on a
stock.
it's a little complicated unless you understand options. I suggest you
google something like (  "option contracts" finance explanation  ) or
similar. Investopedia.com  has some good explanations of things.

Whoops. The other better explanations weren't there when I posted
and I meant to say
total number of open option contracts on a stock "for a particular
strike price."

JPW,

Yes, you're right, these have to be liquidated or exercised by the end
of today.

I bought the position when AAPL was Out of the Money earlier today.  I
paid $0.37 per option inclusive of purchase trading costs.

And yes, you're right, time decay is eating the value with every
passing minute.

But we're now (just) in to the territory over $200, where the options
have INTRINSIC value.  They don't have enough right now to cover the
$0.37, the AAPL share price will need to attain $200.45 to do that.

However, and here's my punt for the day.  Joe So Lo (above) may be
right when he figures that Funds may be buying in to take advantage of
the pull-back that's happened over the last few sessions.

If that happens in any strength, and AAPL goes into, say, the 202 -
204 range (+1% to 2% from current price), then TIME value is not the
issue.  The options would then have pure INTRINSIC value (of just
under $2 to $4 per option, after taking account of sale trading
costs).

The opportunity to turn 37¢ into (say) $2 to $4 in the space of a few
hours is what appeals here.  Multiply that (x100 per contract) and
then multiply that (x Number of Contracts) the deal has merit as a
pure-play short term risk bet.

Clearly the deal was more attractive given how close the AAPL price
was to $200 as a starting position.

Obviously, this is, to reiterate, A PURE RISK TRADE; nothing to do
with strategic investing at all.  If AAPL finishes under $200, the
whole thing goes west.   If AAPL finishes between 200.01 and 200.45, I
make a small day trading loss.  If AAPL finishes anywhere North of
201, I'm happy.

RISK WARNING:  This is the kind of deal I would only contemplate with
cash I am prepared to loose 100%.  As it happens, I made the cash for
this deal this morning, buying back at a lower price call options I
had previously sold, so I'm relaxed about it in this case.

DISCLAIMER :The above statement reflects pricing at time of transaction
(s).  Pricing will change with market movements.  Such movements will
be amplified by effects of time value decay in options near to
expiration and/or other factors.  The above is intended solely as a
statement of my own investment strategy and/or trading tactics.  It is
not intended, nor should it be construed as, investment or trading
advice or as a recommendation to buy or sell any particular
security.   DYOR

Thanks and good trade.

unfortunately the share price and open option interest do interaction
especially on OE day; some say it's manipulation, I'd rather bet it's
just mechanics : they form a pressure on the stock price as they may
get exercised ... anyway, no matter what the reason is, on OE the
share price has a (fâcheuse) tendency of closing at few cents from a
multiple of $5, be careful :)

oh, the "theory" behind it is called "options max pain" :)

see http://www.optionpain.com/MaxPain/Max-Pain.php

it seems that total pain is more or less the same at $195 and $200, a
difference of $ 2M, normally not enough to move the share price, but
still ... there is rarely a rally on OE

Nicu,

You're right, there is the vraiment fâcheuse tendency to finish +/- a
few ¢ of strike price on OE.  Bien observé.

And I tend to agree that it's probably just mechanics tending towards
the sweet spot of Option Pain.  (Or should that be 'unsweet' spot).

So, as I said above, this is PURELY a very short-term risk bet with
cash I can afford to loose, given that there MIGHT be a late-market
buy-in by Funds before close after the pull-back of the last few
days.

I concur with your view that a rally on OE day is unlikely.  This is
purely a punt that an UNLIKELY event may occur.

However, there is a move that can be made now there's SOME intrinsic
value in the position.   And that's to set a trailing stop buffer
which will liquidate the position if any growth in intrinsic value
does not outweigh the (accelerating) decay of time value.

Ho-hum.

You win some; you loose some.  Made nothing on this short term punt.
But still nicely up on the day.
