What official numbers will be released then?

The China Unicom announcement was puzzling to me. It was either a
mistake, or they simply f'ed up by announcing a number that was
ridiculously low. The strange thing is that it was written like a
proclamation of success. Weird.

In any case, there will be several million iPhones sold in the first
3-6 months for China Unicom, regardless of how the first weekend went.
It may involve discounting and whatever by China Unicom, but it is
doubtful to affect Apple.

Then, the 3GS with WiFi comes in the next round, which creates another
slingshot for demand.

The 5000 number is OBVIOUSLY a mistake. Whoever believes that is a
MORON. Apple will reach 300 in NO TIME

What makes you think that people in China wants an Iphone? You can
argue that people in the US will pay premium for an iphone, because it
is perceived to be better than other products out in the market. Can
you really say the same for China, where people consider Wal-Mart
expensive?

Someone mentioned in another discussion that the Wifi is not
important, because of the speed of Unicom's 3G. This is not true,
because 99% of the people in China do not have contracts. They pay per
use. The more they use Unicom's 3G network, the more they have to pay.
Wifi enables them to surf the internet without paying.

Iphones are selling for $800 to $1000 in China. Have you any idea what
the average income in China is? The average income for China in towns
and cities are $3561 per year. You can forget about the 1 billion plus
people. The only ones you can consider are the ones living in the
urban areas. Even the average salary in Beijing is $5,679 per year.
The Iphone would cost 1/6 of their total annual income. Somehow, you
still think that this phone will be successful?

The people who can afford and wanted an iphone have already gotten
theirs in Hong Kong. I don't doubt the 5000 units opening figure.

You obviously don't know anything about China and think you can use US
standards to measure it.

I think you may have a blind spot Trance_Emotion (no offense meant.)
Perhaps you are a little too familiar with China?
It's irrelevant that the average annual income in China is $3500.
Apple sells from a position in the higher margin portion of the market
and then seeps into lower margin areas as appropriate. This is how
they have always worked. This is why Apple with 1/2 the total revenue
of Dell makes 2x times the Net Income of Dell.
there are about 350,000 millionaires in China. I'm guessing there are
tens of million people who make $100,000 or more in China and many
more who make $75,000 or more. Chinese tend to be frugal, but does
Wallmart seem too expensive to them? I don't think so.
Apple doesn't need to sell to everyone to make a lot of money in
China, just a small percentage. As their reputation and understanding
grows, they will identify other profitable areas with a lower price
point that they can move into.

This is where you and I would disagree. You are assuming that 10
million people makes around $100,000 and many more makes $75,000.

From different sources, the top .02% of the people in China are
millionaires. The problem is, only around 2.5 million people make
above 150,000 RMB (or $22,000 USD). The report below shows that the
number of households in China with an income in excess of Rmb 120,000
($18,000 USD) in 2009 is with some confidence estimated to be 4.4
million.  I understand that Apple only needs to sell to a very small
portion of the population. Are you sure that portion exists? And yes,
people do think that Wal-Mart is expensive.

This is a link on the distribution of income in China. Below is a
chart.

When I was living in Beijing two years ago, the cost of things were
surreal to me. If I were hanging out with the locals, breakfast costs
around .50 USD, lunch was maybe $2-3 USD, and dinner would be around
$7. Taking a girl to Starbucks (SBUX sells coffee at the same price as
the US) for coffee was equivilant of going to a 4 star restaurant in
the states. The lattes we are so familiar with suddenly becomes a
highly valued product. Going to Starbucks means you are above average.

Very interesting. I admit I was extrapolating.
I tried to find confirming information before posting, but was unable
good data of any kind. Thanks for the link.
I lived in China for a few years in the early eighties, but its hard
for a foreigner to get a clear picture of things (people always want
to put a good face on everything.) Since then all the Chinese I tend
to interact with are part of the educated or affluent elite. I guess
this has misinformed me more than I thought.
In any case, as I said Wallmart is *not* particularly expensive for
the people i highlight, but the number of those people is much smaller
than I had guessed.
It would be interesting to compare the distribution curves (especially
on the high end) of China with India.

Similar experience for me, but when I was there it was cheaper (and
the food was probably not as good.)

By the way, Trance_Emotion,
There is definitely something wrong with that graph. Their overall
conclusions may well be accurate, but the graph is hard to parse.
The axes are not properly labeled and clearly its not a proper
distribution curve, the number on the curves don't add up properly.
The article claims 4.43 million households with incomes of 120,000 RMB
or more, but the graph clearly shows only 4 or 5 thousand. Also the
distribution curve shows (by my estimate) only about 500,000
households total -- off by at least a factor of 500 I would guess.
Perhaps they have moved a decimal?
Not sure what is going on, but I think they need hire some new people
over at Global Demographics Ltd.

China Unicom sells other handsets, so maybe those other handsets are
doing well.  It may have nothing to do with iPhones.  Either way, it's
been said that ChiPhone sales are already figured into Apple's share
price, so it wouldn't make much of a difference.  Apple is going to
have to sell a total of 10 million iPhones just to hold the share
price above $200.  Amazon's Kindle may be outselling the iPhone
because their stock is on a tear.

Dream on. Kindle's sales will be 1/100th that of the iPhone.

Haha, yes, you're right, I was getting a bit overweight when I was
there <sigh>

You're also right about the graph, there was another article that
showed a distribution similar to the one I had posted. The graphs may
not be accurate, but the overall idea of how uneven the distribution
is, is there.  Glad we can have a reasonable discussion.

Cheers!

There's a problem with "Either way, it's been said that ChiPhone sales
are already figured into Apple's share price." What I'm trying to say
is that IF they priced 10million iPhones into their current stock
price and they really only sell 2-3 million (just a random number),
then the actual figure will have a negative impact on their stock
price when the actual numbers come out.
