PROGRESSIVE SURVEY FINDS OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENT INSURANCE
AGENTS AS RV OWNERS ADMIT TO A MISTAKE OR TWO ON THE OPEN ROAD

Survey Also Provides Insights into How, When and Why RVers Shop For
Insurance

MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio (April 2, 2007) - It's a story independent
insurance agents who sell recreational vehicle insurance have probably
heard at one time or another - the customer calls to say they crumpled
the roof of their RV by misjudging the amount of overhead clearance
they needed, or somehow they forgot the "objects in mirror are closer
than they appear" rule and backed into a post. Well, these RVers are
not alone according to a survey by The Progressive Group of Insurance
Companies that found life on the open road can sometimes get bumpy.

Progressive, the number one seller of RV insurance through independent
agents, surveyed more than 1,000 RVers countrywide to find the amusing
and at times embarrassing blunders they've made while traveling. The
survey also asked about insurance because, when blunders do happen,
it's important to have the right coverage and service that gets them
back on the road, fast.

The survey found the most common mistakes RVers say they make while
RVing are: driving off with the steps extended, backing up into a post
or other stationary object, misjudging the amount of overhead and/or
side clearance space, not connecting the tail lights correctly, and
running out of fuel.

But it's not just operating an RV that some people have trouble with:
Two (2) percent of RVers surveyed actually admitted to mistakenly
leaving a passenger behind at a campground, rest area or other stop
while traveling in their RV. The person left behind most often? A
spouse or significant other; pets and grandparents are least likely to
be left behind.

Even though no insurance policy can guarantee forgiveness by those
left stranded, a specialized RV policy can provide RVers with needed
protection. But, while the majority of RVers surveyed (53 percent)
spend a month or more RVing each year and 42 percent travel more than
500 miles per trip, affording them plenty of time to make a mistake or
two, less than a third (28 percent) bought a stand-alone insurance
policy with specialized RV coverages. In fact, the majority (54
percent) just added their RV to their private passenger auto policy
and 14 percent didn't buy any RV insurance!

But, the survey found that motor home owners want more from their RV
insurance than those with travel trailers. Motor home owners are
nearly two times more likely than travel trailer owners to buy
specialized RV insurance (40 percent versus 22 percent, respectively).
And, they're nearly three times more likely to shop because they want
specialized coverages that are generally not available as an
endorsement on their private passenger auto insurance policy (14
percent versus 5 percent).

"An RV is more than a car, so RV insurance should cover more than what
car insurance covers," said Eric Westphal, RV product manager,
Progressive. "For example, people may keep things in an RV that they'd
never keep in a car, such as jewelry, VCRs, laptops and outdoor gear.
A car insurance policy might not cover these things if they were lost
or damaged in an RV, whereas specialized RV insurance would."

As for how often RVers shop for insurance, more than half say it's
once every three years (56 percent), about a quarter say at least once
a year (27 percent), and the rest say they shop once every two years
(17 percent). The most common motivation for shopping is having bought
a new RV (39 percent), but 11 percent say the last time they shopped
it was because their premium had gone up, and 8 percent say it was
because they moved. The survey also found that, the last time they
shopped for insurance, more RVers said they shopped with an
independent insurance agent than those who said they shopped with a
captive agent or directly by phone or on the Internet.

"Insurance decisions can be hard to make, so we're glad to see many
RVers turning to their local independent agents for help," said
Westphal. "At Progressive, we've been insuring RVs for more than 25
years and offer a range of specialized coverages, competitive rates,
flexible payment plans and responsive claims service. Independent
agents can help RVers understand the benefits of specialized coverages
and the risks associated with simply endorsing an RV onto an auto
insurance policy."

Progressive's specialized RV coverages include:

Total Loss Replacement - Progressive will buy a brand new RV of
similar make and quality if a customer's rig is totaled within the
first five model years;
Emergency Expense Coverage - provides up to $2,000 for lodging and
transportation if an RV is damaged while traveling more than 50 miles
away from the customer's primary residence;
Full-Timer's Package - offers extra coverage for people who use their
RVs as their home or primary residence;
Replacement Cost Personal Effects Coverage - covers the loss of or
damage to the contents of the RV; and
Roadside Assistance Coverage - provides towing to the nearest
qualified repair facility and is a "Sign and Drive" coverage, meaning
no out-of-pocket expenses for customers.
