Tech Jack, thank you for your answer.
Remember the Abu Dubai Soverign Wealth fund
(aka, The Arabs) own 20% of all AMD outstanding shares.
The arabs therefore have a vested interest in AMD,
therefore they will act wisely to foster their investment.

Here is a fictional outline presented as Board Meeting
bullets for the Guys on the Board of  ATI Technology
and Global Foundrys .
Action steps to unlock value of Global and AMD.
1.  Global Foundry to close the purchase of Chartered
Semiconductor.
2.  The Abu Dubai Wealth Fund ( herein after
AKA The Arabs) spend some real superior Ceo is hired
from the outside, to replace Ruiz, to run global.  {Where is
Gen. (Five Star) George Patton when you need him?}
3.  The new CEO integrates Global assets with Chartered
into a (New Global).
4.  During  fiscal 2010 the combined Factory utilization of
"New Global" integrated manufacturing operation increases
above 50%. Note: (Fab utilization fell below 50% in the first
half of 2009.)  Fab utilization has steadily increased.
(rising above 50% breakeven since last July 2009).
5.  Global’s profitable earnings stabilize, and business outlook
improves from  World Global recovery technology upgrade.
6.  New CEO of New Global (NG) unlocks NG’s value by
offering an NG IPO as a tracking stock to monetize New
Global’s assets and establish a normal Semiconductor
Sector price earnings (PE Ratio) multiple between10 to
25. Historically 20 to 1.   Here to for AMD accounted for
it’s interest in Global at cost.  During the third quarter
Global lost money and AMD lowered it’s earnings
by the amount of the Global loss.  Without the Global 3rd
Qtr. loss AMD would have reported a profit.  As AMD is
responsible for Global Losses (to the extent of it’s
percentage interest. In accounting known as
consolidated earnings.)  AMD is also able to reap the
benefit of the future gains of Global.
7.  AMD investment in Global goes up. AMD records
Global gain. AMD stock goes up in price.
8.  AMD spins off Global shares to AMD stockholders.
AMD share holders laugh all the way to the BANK.
Disclosure: The above description is fiction based on
fact.                      THe GHost

Tech;

You might want to look at GF as being a "Abu Dubai" company, a soon to
be very large foundry.  But at the same time AMD being a very strong
strategic business partner.  When GF proves to be successful and they
will, this will also effect AMD's stock price.  So, in a way, you
pretty much do have have stock in this company already.   GF will help
AMD to succeed in the FAB arena, thats a huge asset to AMD
shareholders.

Bogus LOW Settlement--- or--- Non Cash Benefit.
Our team here has be discussing what benefit there is to the 5 year
cross license agreement as a benefit to AMD.
Asside from the technology transfer to global issue.
All ask this question.  How much money will AMD save
from the cross license agreement?
Fact: Intel spends several Billion a year on R&D.
AMD gets to see and use, and therefore leverage off Intel's
Capital expenditures.
With everyone criticizing AMD, for the so called low
settlement, could the value to AMD in non cash benefit
be worth a $Billion a year in reduced R&D? Over five
years it's a five Billion operational cost savings!

In a pure spin-off, a parent company distributes 100% of its ownership
interests in a subsidiary operation as a dividend to its existing
shareholders. After the spin-off, there are two separate, publicly
held firms that have exactly the same shareholder base.
