Good luck with that. May want to try Win98 SE. I think they have
gotten that OS working a little smoother now.

:) I agree JB, the bugs in Win98 were finally fixed when VISTA was
released.. I think if you wait it out til about 2013, VISTA will be
super smooth too..

No seriously, VISTA sucks some serious butt dude.. And they know it,
so they force ppl to buy it by not providing HW drivers for any other
version.. But I have found a way around it and am currently using
Windows XP on the VAIO.. If anyone interested in "upgrading" their
VAIO from Vista to to XP, I have all the drivers that will work and
will be happy to give em to you.. Good luck to all..

You know whats sad, Apple uses an operating system based on FreeBSD,
they can ven come up with their own. Pathetic. They Still use Solaris
for thier Web servers (exept for www.apple.com) and use Windows 2000
for internal network because it's stable and safer.

Check it

My CEO just broke her Sony Viao laptop running XP and needed a
replacement. All of the quick replacements by Sony or Dell or HP came
with Vista preinstalled. Guess what the guys at Best Buy, Circuit
City, and Geeks On Call all recommended? Buy a MacBook and run XP on
it using VMWare Fusion or Bootcamp.

Fortune 1000 businesses don't want to deal with Vista and Office 2007.
Large IT departments tend to wait 5 years or more to upgrade all of
their users OS and application suites, even if the hardware needs
replacing before that. That means their support vendors have to also
support Office 2003, Acrobat 5.0, etc., since their clients can't read
or work with files more current than that.

I am right now working with two computers, a MAC and a PC. I got the
PC for a special project but I must say i haven't been able to get the
Vista running smoothly. I am bored mindless of installing patches and
seeing that "there are some known issues.. would you like to look for
a solution online.. blablabla.." banner.  Everybody warned me not to
get the computer with Vista installed but to ask for the XP.  I wasn't
sure about it and still went and got the Vista because i still have
the chance to downgrade to XP. After 4 weeks with it, every single day
I love and appreciate my MAC more.
I am slowly starting give up and believe I must return to XP.
Now, relevant to the shares and sales. Well.. everybody will have to
end up buying the VIsta sooner or later. Whether we hate it or not.
And maybe they are even getting a boost from all these computers that
just got sold with Vista installed only to trow it away and
reinstalled an old version of XP. Cause i don't think i will get a
rebate now for uninstalling the Vista or do I? can i ask for my money
back?

Subject: Re: just got vista
This board cracks me up. Nothing like fanboys on both sides justing
over religion, er, computer operating systems. Calls for Microsoft
demise are premature. I cannot help but chucke to see how people think
that a hardware company that has great design and is innovative, but
still a hardware company, can overwhelm a company that is used in 95%
of all desktops, and in a growing number of enterprise data centers.
Microsoft is not just about VISTA, boys and girls, Microsoft is a
conglomerate of software products and services. I own an iPhone, and I
love that thing, but keep your reality in perspective, there are a
heck of a lot more Windows Mobile devices out there than Apple has
iPods. But agian, Microsoft is not in the busienss of branding the
hardware, only the software. So, Apple at a PE of 30 is still
overwpriced in a slowing economy, especially if the revenue growth
cannot be sustained. Apple is far more vulnerable to a slowing economy
that is fueled by consumer spending, while Microosft isn't nearly as
much.

The Apple fanboys should just go to their space and talk all the great
thigns about their machines, as they are indeed great machines, but to
just jump around talking their religion shows weakeness and
insecurity. Kind of like the short man's syndrome, the smaller the
more noise you have to make. Some of you were probably in kindergarten
when the Web 1.0 collapsed on Wall Street and Silicon Valley, so go
and learn a few history lessons and do not repeat the same mistake
twice. Just in case, economies and businesses do not make decisions on
who screams the loudest or who has the most beautiful of anything, but
about who has the most practical system. Microsoft made its fortune
and its ecosystem by catering to a developer community that is close
to 20 million people today. There are not even that many Macs out
there, much less that many developers. While there are indeed converts
from the PC market, and there are other that bought their good looking
Mac Pros to run Windows XP or Vista on it, but look good, much of the
market share of Apple has come at the expense of Linux and its
inability to make ANY significant inroads into the desktop market. OSX
is the only UNIX-based OS that has had any success, but let us not
forget that it has been in development for well over 10 years, going
all the way back to Job's NEXT computer.

So, fanboys on both sides, rather than bashing about VISTA or OSX,
let's get serious about the financial fundamentals of these companies,
both of which are widely successful. The rest is just religion, and we
all know it. That's why the world and nature has always had Vanilla
and Chocolate. Pick what you like and mind your own business about
what others do or choose.

Subject: AAPL vs MSFT doesn't matter
Apparently most people here don't understand the foundation and far-
reaching effects of Microsoft's enterprise software. Businesses large
and small are greatly investing in information technology for
information workers - which are primarily the results of either
Microsoft produced or partner developed/enhanced software. There is
also great growth in Microsoft based server products particularly
SharePoint technologies (totally understated sleeper - fastest growing
product family of all time for all of Microsoft's products).

Given that the Office suite is a business staple, as web based
collaboration (SharePoint) technologies continue to grow, businesses
will have no choice but to keep their Office clients up to date in
order to be able to take advantage of new features - technology based
competitive advantage. Derivatives of this trend include the systems/
products that are required to support them. These are Windows based
servers and SQL databases. And need I mention the proliferation of
Exchange + the emergence and continued growth of Unified
Communications?

Currently, I don't even think Microsoft has competition in the
business world until CIO/CTOs really think switching  to something
like OpenOffice is a good idea. I don't see this happening anytime in
the near future. Who doesn't use Microsoft Outlook at work? Can you
imagine any financial analyst using anything other than Microsoft
Excel?

Now let's assume there's a rogue Executive out there that mandates a
non-Microsoft productivity suite for there business. Unfortunately,
they will not be as competitive in their respective industries just by
the fact that their employees will be wasting an unsurmountable of
productivity trying to make their documents compatible with business
partners.

Well what about custom software you ask? Guess what jobs are paying
the big bucks? Say hello to Microsoft based .NET technologies. This
isn't exactly my area of expertise but I believe the speed and ease of
which custom solutions can be built on top existing Microsoft
platforms is another driver for enterprise growth.

And what about web-based technologies? That's a mixed bag right now.
But the next time you visit your favorite websites, take a peek at the
page extensions. If they end in asp or aspx, chances are they are
being served by Microsoft based servers.

As far as the Apple vs Microsoft debate goes, Apple is purely a
consumer product and is completely being driven by hype. This hype is
driven by the perceived ease of entrance into technology for your
everyday mom,pop,non-techies that only needs to browse the web. Notice
that I am not mentioning design folks as they have generally always
been Apple users. The recent growth has really been from people that
are buying Apple products for the 'cool' factor believe it or not. I
really believe the root cause of their growth is not because of OS X,
but because of their innovative and aesthetically pleasing hardware
design. The operating system is almost a second thought to most
average Joe/Jane consumers - hence, this is why everyone seems to ask
what they need on their Macs to run Windows. So as long as Apple can
continue to deliver 'cool' consumer products, I don't see any growth
hindrances.

But I do see possible threats to both Microsoft and Apple personal
computers coming in the form of virtualization and VMWare, hence
Mircosoft's recent public pushes in this territory for their own
hypervisor.

So in conclusion, Microsoft and Apple are competitors, but they are
really competing in two really different universes. Microsoft's
ecosystem of products and presence in business productivity is just
too great for any other vendor to throughly penetrate and overtake
them in market share. Luckily for Apple, that leaves room in the
consumer world for them conquer as they are.

Disclaimer: I have 30 shares of AAPL and Zero shares of MSFT. I
believe in the hype.

Just got Vista ultimate upgrade. Upgraded my machine from Windows XP
SP2. Nothing worked anymore, I was really shocked. The programs didn't
start anymore, the explorer was crashing every 5 minutes. I did a
clean install, and got troubles again. Poor frame rate in games, huge
hardware demand for some translucent windows... I am an IT
proffesional, and I say... Microsoft slashed their own wrists with
Vista... too bad.

I must say that I am a huge Microsoft and Apple fan. I don't like when
people are trying to surface ancient wars between those two companies.
Even if Balmer says that iPhone sucks because it doesn't have a
keypad... He forgets something essential, that apparently Vista forgot
too.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SOFTWARE THESE DAYS. iPhone is great because of the
software, and not because of the touch screen. I am running instant
messenger, apache server, VNC software, pdf viewer and many more on
iPhone. I can't get them running all together on Vista... no sir!

Where is going Apple? "Use any hardware to achieve your goals"
Where is going Microsoft? "Use our software to achieve your goals"

See the difference?

A lot of people miss one point in these discussions: Microsoft's
biggest advantage in pure OS desirability has ALWAYS been ease of
programming. And I do mean always. Their first product was a BASIC
compiler! And now, Visual Studio is THE IDE; nothing else comes close
to it. And .NET and the CLR are making it even easier for programmers
to create and their programs to interact.

Oh, and how'd you like having to hack your iPhone to run the software
you like? If it's all about software, then why would you promote the
iPhone, which was purposely locked to new software? And which was
(is?) subject to bricking, voiding of warranty, and getting laughed
out of the Apple store if modified?

Finally, I'm kind of tired of Vista being blamed for driver issues.
Drivers are, for the most part, NOT written by Microsoft! Except for
very generic ones implementing well-known, standardized interfaces,
such as VGA monitors, USB mass storage devices, PS/2 and USB mice and
keyboards (minus any product-specific features), etc.. So, blame the
company that made your peripheral, for not providing drivers to
Microsoft despite the generous two year lead time they were given.
