Trust them to not implode or anything. I've been interested in them as
a potential investment since they started rolling out their new ETF
line--they seem fairly stable as far as financials go in the current
environment. But if anybody has any potential potholes ahead for them
(besides, like, the whole economy going in the toilet) I'd appreciate
a mention of them.

Just short it. It has no way to go but down, and down again and again.
When WM was in its 30's and CFC was in big trouble, we thought WM was
different. BAC will go down big from now as well, C and WB will create
new low. There is no reason this thing remains close to its 52 week
high unless a major part of its business was shorting the financial
sectors.

I actually like NTRS.  A pretty conservative company, invests money
for the ultra-wealthy and avoids a lot of the "trendy" investments
that have plagued the rest of the sector.  I haven't done my homework
on it in terms of valuation, but overall a stable company IMO.
Excellent management in Waddell too.  Then again, nothing is 100% (or
even 50%) safe these days.

Here is the latest news:  It seems it's a bad news, isn't it ?

Form 8-K for NORTHERN TRUST CORP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----

17-Sep-2008

Regulation FD Disclosure

Item 7.01. Regulation FD Disclosure.
Northern Trust Corporation furnishes the following information
regarding its relationships with Lehman Brothers in light of the
announcement that Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. has filed for
bankruptcy.

Lehman Brothers is a client of Northern Trust and a borrower of
securities under Northern Trust's securities lending program. Northern
Trust has undertaken a number of actions in recent weeks to reduce
risk exposures to Lehman Brothers. In this connection, investors
should be aware of certain points:

- Northern Trust had no outstanding loans to Lehman Brothers at the
time of its bankruptcy filing.

- Northern Trust does not hold any Lehman Brothers securities in its
balance sheet investment portfolio.

- Northern Trust manages assets across numerous products and funds on
behalf of our clients. In that capacity, we hold Lehman Brothers fixed
income securities, both short- and long-term, in certain funds and
accounts, including within securities lending collateral pools. In
addition, we hold Lehman Brothers equity securities in certain funds
and accounts, primarily related to index strategies. We are actively
monitoring and evaluating these holdings in the context of the current
market environment.

The information in this Form 8-K, is being furnished and shall not be
deemed "filed" for purposes of Section 18 of the Securities Exchange
Act of 1934 (the "Exchange Act") or otherwise subject to the
liabilities of that section, nor shall it be deemed to be incorporated
by reference in any registration statement or other document filed
under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended, or the Exchange Act,
except as otherwise stated in such filing.

That actually is reassuring.  Limiting exposure in the past weeks is
probably a good thing.  Hopefully they had the foresight to protect
themselves.  I still like this company alot.

You obviously don't know much about Northern Trust if you are
comparing it to WM and BAC. Northern Trust has the biggest, oldest,
and best branches that they have cherry picked throughout the
wealthiest suburbs of Chicago. They have very minimal risk because
their loan quality is better than any other bank out there. The
average person who banks at Northern Trust has over $500K in
investible assets. This is a rock solid company that caters to the
ultra-rich.

Just short it. It has no way to go but down, and down again and

When WM was in its 30's and CFC was in big trouble, we thought WM was
different. BAC will go down big from now as well, C and WB will
create
new low. There is no reason this thing remains close to its 52 week
high unless a major part of its business was shorting the financial
sectors.

//It went down 3 times in 3 trading days, it will go down again and
again in the coming year. This might be the best financial stock to
short now: look at any other prestigious banks except WFC and USB
which are the best, is the stock price of any of them more than HALF
of their 52-week high? When it comes to quality of loans, look at TMA:
they make jumbo loans to people with GOOD credit and their former CEO
spend more than 10 million $s of his own and his family's money to buy
its stock in multiple times at 30+, 20+ time of it's current stock
price $0.30/share!

I do not short any individual stock which was my principle, thus I let
big money making opportunities slip away again and again: when LDK@57,
WM @32, C@33...

When it comes to doing business with rich customers, how many of its
customers are richer than former AIG Mr. Greenberg? His wealth
shrinked almost 90% in the last 3 weeks!

Well said.  I think its a good company long term and will make it
through all this stuff.  However, there is definitely money to be made
in short term.  Today was obviously a negative shock because of the
lawsuit, but that will pass.  NTRS is a good company, low risk, and is
well positioned LONG TERM.  I never said anything short term with
technicals.

Historically financials the hardest-hit sector at the end of each
economic cycle. LONG TERM may be 6 months, or 5 years or 20 years or
even more. Keep in mind, what is the historical NASDAQ index and what
is it now and how many years passed since that high?

Stock price sooner or later will reflect economy. If we have a tech
breakthrough here in the next few years like Internet, economy growth
would be strong. w/o a growth point, where to earn money? It's going
below 40 sooner or later.

Uh oh--<a href="http://www.nypost.com/seven/09272008/business/
lehman_collapse_undermines_northern_trus_130964.htm">Lehman collapse
undermines Northern Trust's security lending business</a>. Which I
know little about but according to that article losses in security
lending aren't supposed to happen very often.

I actually think they're a great company with a good Dividend.
Obviously all bank stocks are down right now. But I have always felt
that this company is a $60 to $65 a share stock. I thought it was
overvalued at $88 this year so I shorted them. But right now they are
for sure close to their bottom. I'm going to buy heavy once they
reach  $45....I admit I think their P/E is slightly high but this is a
long term stock and their books look good (they invested 100 mil plus
to shore up their money markets, which contributed to their loss this
quarter) Add also the governments 1.6 bil investment.....I think this
stock will NOT implode.....Very conservative management...they would
never dream about getting into the terrible mortgage buisness....
