Subject: The Fix is in at BSC... but it's BS!
Bear Sterns (non-bank) shareholders are getting special protection
from the credit crunch... when there are millions of shareholders in
hundreds of other non-bank lenders who have already taken the hit
personally themselves.

Who is and who isn't ging to benefit/hurt from goverment
interfearance?  This selective myopia does not insure long term
stability and functioning of the markets... it just more
uncertainty!

The Fed/Treasury should be issuing debt and buying the MBS to create a
stable floor for in the secondary market!... problem solved... in a
manner that is simple and equitable to everyone, banks, dealers, non-
banks, and shareholders.

What is Up and what is Down?

great trade;
not surprising that BS's troubled, given that failures in its SIV were
harbingers of this mess.
of course, now that the fed's propping them up (via JPM) they might
survive for a while
but there's still loads of leverage out there, e.g., see Carlyle at
30:1
question is, who's going to be swamped by margin calls next?

JPMorgan Chase -- which has been hurt far less by the mortgage morass
than other investment banks -- is providing secured funding to Bear
Stearns for 28 days. This is good enough to distribute bonus/ pension
and all to be paid to the top officers leaving,or fired within 28 days
from now.

They secured their departure pay from fed.

What I can't wrap my head around is that to work for this bank as an
executive you need an MBA from a top 20 school.  With that much
intellectual capital, couldn't they see this happen.

I agree with KUDU that the fed is financing the departures of the top
level execs.

On another note, this bank will be taken over. I'll consider it around
$7.  Anyone?

Geez.

What was Wilmington Trust thinking --holding 27.3 million shares?
(40% drop - mindboggling) Vanguard Windsor Fund holders are taking a
beating today too--ouch!

Of course, if there's any evidence of that, they'll go directly to
jail.

Personally, and I know it's risky, but I like taking risks, I think
this is a rumor driven market right now (and then saw their CEO say
the same).  Of course, rumors may be all it takes to take down an
investment bank.  Scary thought.

Looking at what actually happened:
1-  they expect to meet analyst estimates on Monday.
2-  they got enough liquidity to end the liquidity rumors (which
were...rumors).

Two things that should be good for them have turned really sour.
Thus, when the facts are revealed monday, I expect a surge, just like
with Humana after they got double punished for the same crime not even
a week ago.

Don't forget that it is in the businesses best intrest to keep a
positive outlook even if it isn't so rosy.  The CEO saying that they
should meet the estimate means very little when they said on Monday
that there weren't having any financial worries.  Lies float and sink
the boat.

Either  A:
It's all so screwed up internally that Schwartz didn't know what was
going (even when others on the street did)... and so spoke ignorantly
in response to the leaked info... not very confidence inspiring to say
the least, and huge amount of uncertianty for the markets.

Or B: Schwartz intentionally lied to try to keep the boat from taking
on water... also not very confidence inspiring, but eminently less of
a concern for the market in general.

Either way... run for the hills.

I dont think BSC were facing the kind of liquidity problenms that its
being made out to be, its a rumor mill that has killed them, and in
this market every financial whether good or bad will get slaughtered,
stay away from the financials for this whole year unless you want to
short the stocks. April is reporting time and look out for more
mayhem..
