Subject: Re: What is going on with the Split
Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Board of Directors Approves 50-for-1 Split of
Its Class B Common Stock
OMAHA, Neb., Nov 03, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
(BRK.A)(BRK.B) today announced that its Board of Directors approved a
50-for-1 split of its Class B Common Stock. The stock split is subject
to the approval of Berkshire's shareholders, who must approve an
amendment to Berkshire's certificate of incorporation to increase
Berkshire's total number of authorized shares of common stock, as well
as the total number of authorized shares of Class B Common Stock, in
order to permit the consummation of this split. Berkshire's Class A
Common Stock is not being split. Berkshire has not yet set the date
for the special meeting of its shareholders to vote on the amendment
to its certificate of incorporation, or the record date for the stock
split.

The great majority of the stock issued by Berkshire in the BNSF
acquisition announced today will be "A" shares. "B" shares, however,
will also be needed to accommodate holders of smaller amounts of BNSF
shares who opt for a share exchange rather than a cash payment.

By splitting Berkshire "B" shares 50-for-1, we can accommodate even
the smallest holdings of BNSF shares that elect a tax-free exchange.

Berkshire Hathaway and its subsidiaries engage in diverse business
activities including property and casualty insurance and reinsurance,
utilities and energy, finance, manufacturing, retailing and services.
Common stock of the company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange,
trading symbols BRK.A and BRK.B.

Thanks,

No there cant be a time frame on how long you need to hold a stock
before it splits. Think logically if I were to buy BRK.B today and it
splits tomorrow and if I don't get the split then I lose (3411 - 65 =
3346); which would be a deterrent to the investor as well as illegal
for the company as my loss will be someone's gain.

So bottomline is ... you will get the split if you get your trade even
a millisecond before the split.

Hope this helps.

Smart men ! thanks ... I bought10 B shares two days ago but sold it
today. Maybe in the future I'll buy only 1, class A and let it ride
forever.
As it gets closer to the split I'll consider buying again or under $3K
if it hits. $3400 or above seems crazy.

I have ONE share of BRK.B I bought long time ago.  I would love to see
the split.

Keep in mind the folloing... I doubt the price would fluctuate too
much, bottom line is the price of class B is still relative to class
A.  The new ratio A:B will be 1:1500 if it happens.  The split is
still require approval from stock holders and might not happen.

(found in http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/compab.html)

The Relative Prices of Berkshire Class A and Class B Stock

The Class B can never sell for anything more than a tiny fraction
above 1/30th of the price of A. When it rises above 1/30th, arbitrage
takes place in which someone ¾ perhaps the NYSE specialist ¾ buys the
A and converts it into B. This pushes the prices back into a 1:30
ratio.

On the other hand, the B can sell for less than 1/30th the price of
the A since conversion doesn’t go in the reverse direction. All of
this was spelled out in the prospectus that accompanied the issuance
of the Class B.

When there is more demand for the B (relative to supply) than for the
A, the B will sell at roughly 1/30th of the price of A. When there’s a
lesser demand, it will fall to a discount.

In my opinion, most of the time, the demand for the B will be such
that it will trade at about 1/30th of the price of the A. However,
from time to time, a different supply-demand situation will prevail
and the B will sell at some discount. In my opinion, again, when the B
is at a discount of more than say, 2%, it offers a better buy than the
A. When the two are at parity, however, anyone wishing to buy 30 or
more B should consider buying A instead.

Not so much in principle, I am banking on "short memory investors" and
automatic reports that will compared the $3-4K range to the under
$100.00 value and jump in, I already started buying a few shares and
just let it ride for years to come. For sure is not going BK any time
soon. Like some other companies. Up and downs yes. BK never.

Don't know when, according to their website the date hasn't been set
yet. I think I may buy now. By the time the split occurs the price
will be close to $100 after the split, it already climbed over a
100pts in 2 days. Do you think this stock will explode like AIG after
the split?
