OK...I jumped out today (with a nice little gain) once I began to
think with reason. This stock was my jewel pick of the year, but ONLY
if I could get in on the IPO.  A 70% gain from the IPO price to the
market open price represents just too much of a gain for me to
confidently expect more large growth in the share price.    I can't
take the uncertainty right now, especially with the market in such a
panic. Good luck to you who are in it LONG.  Perhaps if it dips back
under $51, I'll go LONG again.

You had to be on the IPO list with major broker houses.  For example
Fidelity had as an offering but you had to indicate to them your
interest (how many shares) you are interested in buying.  However, I
had a friend that had wanted 500 shares and he was on the indicated
list and he only got 100 shares at the $29.00 price.  So he has a nice
profit in his wallet.

However to be considered for most IPO's you need to have at least
$250,000.00 yes $250K in assets to be considered...good luck in
trading and hope this answered your question.

$29 is IPO price, but small investors like myself don't get the
privilege to get it at that price unless your broker has access to
IPOs and offers you shares at the IPO price.

For everyone concerned about VMware using code that is locked-in to
Open Source licenses:

VMware Server 5.3 and prior worked on the FreeBSD OS, which is
released under a BSD license.

It would (and ultimately, will) be trivial to port ESX to a FreeBSD
kernel.
I know VMware on BSD is a highly-requested feature already, VMware is
a smart company with a good head on its shoulders. This is a GROWTH
market, especially with technologies like Sun Blackbox coming to
market:

Nice try, but the company you work for is VMware! Notice the lowercase
'w'.

Thank you,

Exactly, this sounds like FUD shots off the bow from the likes of
Microsoft. I know they have a similar technology coming ("free") with
their next-generation servers.

I think the Microsoft boat has too many leaks to ever be patched up
and will slowly watch their server hardware die a long and terrible
death. Every server administrator I know now virtually refuses to
implement Windows servers in any enterprise solutions.
Having a powerful contendor like VMWare in the Linux VM market is
exciting. They may have trouble competing long-term with Zen. But, I
think VMWare's history, mass-adoption (thanks to the free server
product), and ease of use will let them (and US!) ride this one
through and profit greatly.

MOHIT, $52 OR $55, thats what VMW is worth today and thats what
inevstors need to understand. 2 months or 2 seconds is a lot of time

I totally agree with you. This stock have done lot better. Many people
just dont understand and not factoring the market condition that
worries investor. I personaly believe this stock will do lot better in
coming weeks. Take a look at LULU , UA. I think VMW is the winner!!!!

GO VMW...

Folks,

Not sure if you all had a chance to play in today for vmware, but I
did.. Here are my observations on vMware.

1. Had vmware been IPO before July 27 ( i am glad it didn't happen),
vmware would have done much better job.

This year saw a very good welcome for IPOs compared to last year. I
would say specially before July 26th.

Look at INFN, DDUP, LULU,BAGL and many more and check their progress
they did in first week. Forget abt what  happened later .. :) . Here,
I am only referring the BULLISH attitude the market had towards growth
oriented companies.. Even though INFN had widened quarterly losses,
it's still trading at 1.5 times the IPO prices..

Now compare the context of VMWare IPO with the above mentioned stocks
had.. Inspite of far better growth and financial standings and worser
market conditions VMware did close at 1.75 times or or 75% above IPO
price..

This boils down to only one thing in short term perspective.. Please
note that i am not talking abt hype here.. VMware has some good
credentials. Please go check SEC filings for revenues and profit  and
compare that with GOOG. You will understand the reasoning behind that
comparison prevailing in industry..

How will vmware play in for market conditions in next few weeks ??
Today's close was so much factored in by market play..It's very
important to understand this ..

Your Qns are  (Please keep the context to 2-3 weeks):

1. Will it come down to 140 to 145 or lower  -- >   assuming Dow Jones
or other index go down by another 5%
to say 12500 ??

Folks who want to compare vmware to Blackstone, please stay away from
this discussion..

2. How will vmware fair if market stays abt same . i.e. Dow around
13000+/- few points.. Will it go up ??

Share your opinions.. Note that you need to throw your perspective on
only one of the above questions, not both. I am assuming that market
won't improve in next 2-3 weeks.. If i was sure that it will, i
wouldn't be asking how vmware will do .. :) ..

M

In my opinion the stock is currently way too overpriced! The stock
will come down to where it should be within 2 months (around 35-40).
It may then shoot back up later based on how VmWare does in the coming
quarters.

i think everyone here lacks patience...remember folks rome was not
built in a day and the market is up and down...everyone wants that
quick fix, but the key to making money is patience and with that, your
investment/trade comes to fruit... vmw is extremely profitable and
those who show patience will be rewarded as the stock rises and the
market corrects itself after the credit scare. i also would like to
say, most would not know, but the product works, and works very very
well!
