Subject: ABK similar to CIT and WAMU?
Just a bit nervous looking at how CIT and Wamu ended up.  I am
thinking of going into ABK due to their $2.2 billion profit. can
someone who has been foloowing this stock please tell me what the pros
and cons are currently for a new investor? thanks.

As I've been saying for the past few weeks, ABK is junk. This isn't my
evaluation. That's the company's market rating.

If you are worried, you have every reason to be. Check here:

Sorry Dude.

Sometimes it's just the way the cards tumble.

Thanks, that is worrying.  So the $2.2billion profit is a bit
misleading? coudl the sec allow them to say that knowing they havent
declared all financial details- or could JP Morgan be wrong? I guess
at this point in time abk would be a bit of a gamble for me.....if JPM
are proved correct then ABK could go the same way as CIT (which i
thought was too big to fail- but proven wrong)

Calypso is only giving you half the story. ABK is a risky play - to be
sure. The earnings are not artificial - just as mark to market
accounting rules in the past decreased the value of the company
artificially, now the changes in the accounting rules have
artificially lifted it - the truth is somewhere in between. Mortgage
default rates have slowed; the housing market is improving not
deteriorating.

Follow the releases between now and Nov 16th when the company reports
its capital reserves. They must maintain $400 million dollars.
If it dips below that several things could happen:
1. regulatory takeover
2. someone steps in and gives them the reserve in exchange for a share
in the company
3. Wisoconsin waives the requirement seeing future growth prospects
but puts them into some kind of supervisory watch.

If the reserves are above the required level look for Moody's or the
S&P raising their rating - not by much, but some. One of the main
reasons ABK can't write new business is because of multiple downgrades
that have come mostly from Moodys.  If Moodys wants to maintain its
neutral reputation they will have to come in and give some kind of
support as conditions have improved.

Mortgage market is still deteriorating, what planet are you living on?
Housing has yet to reach a bottom est 3rd quarter next year.  And
don't even get me started on the commercial side.
If housing market was improving FNM wouldn't need yet another taxpayer
bailout.
ABK is trading at a dollar for a very good reason.  It's junk.

CIT's failure has made me weary. FNM and FRE although losing billions
have the fed to bail them out....im just worried if like CIT, ABK
can't get funding the fed will just let it disappear.

Since the onset of housing crisis, Ambac has been hit by losses on its
coverage of risky financial instruments such as mortgage-backed
securities and has been working to reduce its exposure to such debt
instruments. We are yet to see any significant positive turnaround in
Ambac, neither do we expect any in the near future. While we expect a
prolonged environment of uncertainty, we continue to recommend the
shares as Neutral. - ZACKS

LOL. Tell me please: how does one short a one dollar stock? Prior
shorts would already be out and once out, you can't get back in at
that price.

Shorter? Pulleeeze.

Investordude --
I am presently residing on planet Earth. The housing numbers are
improving. The hardest hit areas Florida, California and Arizona have
bottomed . The rate of delinquencies is being offset now by 1st time
buyers buying homes because of the tax credit for new home buyers.
Mortgage applications are up, rates are going up, inventory of unsold
homes is stabilized.
The commercial real estate market sucks ands may get worse. But my
understanding is that ABK has little if any exposure to the commercial
real estate market. Perhaps this is a misapprehension on my part. I
would welcome you to relieve me of my ignorance.
