I got into this company at about $26, the next day it dropped to 19.
I am still in it because I kept thinkinking it would go up.  Will it?
When?

There will continue to be consolidation in the rental car industry for
the next several years.  You ahev ridden the stock from $26 to
$10.......you should hang onto it at this point.  I do not seeing it
going much lower and there is an upside longterm.

id hold. budget will never, ever go away. i worked for them for 2
years. rough rough industry to work in. but anyway, that being said,
it is a well known industry fact that you cannot ever debrand a car
rental co. the budget brand is incredibly strong but even if it wasnt.
they would never debrand it. so your stock with budgets name on it
will eventually pop up, especially now that they will make more
revenue since all of the subprimes will be moving soon and need to
rent trucks!

I think you are right. I got into this at 11.55.  Might regret that,
but I have a limit lower in case it dips to average down.

Avis is the best rental car company I have ever dealt with.  Their
Avis Preferred system is incredibly convenient, their customer service
(i find) is great, and their cars are in good shape.

Definitely concerned about debt ratings and their financing prospects,
but given how desperate Detroit is to sell cars, I doubt they will
have too much trouble getting new cars.

I am sorely lacking in my research.  I'm just buying the name I know.
Hopefully I am correct.

A noncash impairment charge for goodwill? This is an action taken by
Avis Budget that must not be overlooked. Such an impairment charge is
a powerful indicator of an extremely serious problem of company
overvaluations of their own value! At least they're finally admitting
that their goodwill was overly inflated in order to bloat their
financials and gain investor interest. I took one look at their recent
4Q report and immediately exited my long position today: 2100 @
$12.72. Sold every last share I own. Thanks Avis!

This goodwill charge is completely irrelevant to the fundamentals of
the business, in fact, it may have positive tax benefits (I'm not a
tax expert).

If you're focused on the impairment, you should just be in a mutual
fund.

Looks like the investors have spoken. I hope, for your sake, you don't
own any more of this stock evilcon.

Actually, I bought more yesterday.  Avis just closed it's credit
facility and only had to pay 50 basis points (0.5%) above where it was
paying.  Given the credit market conditions, it's a great sign, and I
think that is what has battered the stock the last few days.

I'm sorry to hear that Eric. A great sign according to the CEO in the
articles released last night that you read . However, it acted as an
even better sign to investers today that the company is in trouble. I
would cut your 3% loss on your investment from this morning and sell
Avis. Trader's rule: never lose more than 2% on a single trade.

My average is much much lower than $12, so I am still very much in the
green.  I am not a trader, so I don't really care what happens day to
day on this.

I believe this goodwill impairment comes from a recent change in the
accounting rules. Used to be, companies that bought other companies
only to see their business go downhill would carry the goodwill from
that acquisition (essentially, a guess of how much they overpaid for
the company) indefinitely. This led to large differences between total
"book" value and tangible "book" value. I have been seeing this
impairment on a number of companies reporting recently, but since it
seems to be a new requirement, it is probable that some investers are
reacting adversely. If they haven't already, I would expect to see a
monster impairment from Sprint on their Nextel goodwill.
