Did anyone find it interesting that Sprint CEO Hesse didn't deny
speculation at a UBS investor conference in New York that Sprint could
merge with Deutsche Telekom?

A GSM/WiMax combo might just happen very soon according to Citi
analyst Michael Rollins who upgraded the shares and said there is a
55% chance the company will merge in 2010 with Deutsche Telekom (DT)
wireless unit T-Mobile.

The chess board has a couple of surprise plays left.  Like I said that
other GSM carrier has to be mulling over its options too.

A Sprint/DK merger will crush T and Vz in 3G/4G network, handsets and
future iPhone sales all in one step and they know it!  Do you see why
they're so worried?

I been hearing that story for months. But where the hell is
Motorola's
commitment to the front end "Devices". If they are true believers the
"Droid" should have been a 4G device.

According to the WiMAX Forum®, there are 519 WiMAX networks deployed
in 146 countries worldwide with more than 10 million subscribers.
WiMAX is supporting a range of diverse business models including
retail and wholesale access, smart grid applications, and retail-only
broadband connectivity for users at home or on the go.

Motorola lands more WiMAX contracts, "WiMAX is a robust solution for
providing broadband today in emerging markets as well as in more
competitive developed markets. For example, WiMAX has the ability as a
platform to meet the unique needs of operators like Clearwire in the
United States and Imagine in Ireland," Brda said. "We believe WiMAX
will continue to grow and its future path to 802.16m provides a way of
delivering more bandwidth even more efficiently. In addition, we are
planning new products in 2010 that will be geared for regional
operators."

Motorola continues to be the leading WiMAX vendor since it entered the
market in 2005. It now has contracts with more than 35 operators in
more than 20 countries, the majority of whom have launched commercial
service. In a report issued by Infonetics Research they stated that
"Motorola takes the lead in the fast-rebounding WiMAX equipment and
device market."

Recently, Clearwire deployed its CLEAR(TM) 4G WiMAX service in
Chicago, the latest of a number of markets across the U.S. using
Motorola's network infrastructure, deployment, services and devices.
Another Motorola customer, Time Warner Cable, launched its Road Runner
Mobile 4G network service in several markets this month including:
Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro, North Carolina, and Dallas, Texas.
In the UAE, integrated telecom service provider 'du' launched its
mobile WiMAX network for the Dubai Metro. Motorola's WiMAX equipment
provides mobile connectivity and effective backhaul for Wi-Fi traffic
on the Dubai Metro transport system train carriages as well as in the
Metro stations.

Rebelleader ~ thanks for sharing.  An AT&T exec recently stated that
iPhone users represent 40% of the data-usage traffic; essentially
blaming iPhone users for being network hogs.  On Wednesday Mr. de la
Vega, a  T exec, stated openly "We need to educate the customer ...
We've got to get them to understand what represents a megabyte of
data".  How does it make you feel to learn T's solution may introduce
a data-usage surcharge to iPhone owners to curtail your network hog
appetite for surfing the web and watching video content on your
iPhones?

Looks like instead of upgrading their infrastructure or finding ways
to offer more features, T is going to stick it to their customers.

"AT&T has moved closer to charging special usage fees to heavy data
users, including those with iPhones and other smartphones. Ralph de la
Vega, CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, came close on
Wednesday to warning about some kind of use-based pricing while
speaking at a UBS conference. 'The first thing we need to do is
educate customers about what represents a megabyte of data and...we're
improving systems to give them real-time information about their data
usage,' he said.'"Longer term, there's got to be some sort of pricing
scheme that addresses the [heavy] users.' AT&T has found that only 3%
of its smartphone users — primarily iPhone owners — are responsible
for 40% of total data usage, largely for video and audio, de la Vega
said. Educating that group about how much they are using could change
that, as AT&T has found by informing wired Internet customers of such
patterns. De la Vega's comments on data use were previewed in a
keynote he gave in October at the CTIA, but he went beyond those
comments on Wednesday: 'We are going to make sure incentives are in
place to reduce or modify [data]uses so they don't crowd out others in
the same cell sites.' Focus groups have been formed at AT&T to figure
out how to proceed."

My wife and I both have first Gen iPhones that are out of contract in
Feb.  God I hope Sprint has a 4g enabled smartphone by then.  My wife
and I are ready to jump ship and back up our S shares by becoming
Sprint customers.

Subject: NEWS: Kaufman Bros. analyst Mr. Shaw Wu reports a more realistic ETA for a Verizon iPhone? No sooner than 2012!
Analyst Mr. Wu is quoted saying,

"While we believe Vz is likely inevitable at some point when 4G
technology rolls out in 2012 or so, we believe Sprint and/or T-Mobile
are more willing partners for Apple in helping maintain margins and
customer controls... Given all these reasons, Wu said a deal between
Verizon and Apple would likely take longer than many currently expect.
He said it would be more realistic for Apple to make deals with T-
Mobile or Sprint before Verizon."

Conflicting reports in recent months have cited analysts claiming a
Verizon iPhone is due for launch next year and is already being
tested, while others, like Wu, say it’s unlikely.

Given the scarce amount of evidence that a Verizon iPhone is in the
works, we’re leaning toward agreeing with Wu. Verizon CEO Ivan
Seidenberg told The Wall Street Journal earlier this year that Apple
would be more likely to share the iPhone with Verizon once 4G networks
were implemented. Verizon will begin deploying its 4G network in 2010.

With respect to LTE Mr. Wu is quoted saying, "Though Verizon has said
it would begin deploying its 4G in 2010, it would be [naive] to expect
the network to be up and running immediately. Cellular networks take
[several years] to install and optimize; even 3G networks in the
United States are far from mature. Therefore, Wu’s estimate of 2012 is
reasonable albeit conservative."
