Can they cut costs to match Amazon's prices on the mail order side? I
searched for three books on both sites just now, the prices were equal
for one and Amazon had ~20% cheaper for the other two.

Borders sucks like stinky fish! I have been trying to place an online
order for 2 days and their system doesn't take the order. I called
cust service and was placed on hold for nearly 30 minutes just now.
When she finally answers, she didn't really know how to use the system
to place my order and took up another 15 minutes to place my order
which was already saved in my shopping cart along with the payment
information. I usually shop Amazon but I have a gift card for borders.
I won't use borders again.

To be fair:
Borders won't rape you on the shipping costs like Amazon.
I had what I thought was a steal at amazon until they started throwing
shipping costs at me.  With Borders, it's $25 orders and up, and you
get free shipping.  You don't have to pay them anything extra to be a
"SUPER SAVER!" member or crap like that.

Searches are also better through Borders than Amazon.  When searching
a series, they actually come up in published order, not "Whatever
order we damn well feel like" as Amazon seems to.

Lastly: Amazon's prices are about to go up, thanks to different states
having enough of them not paying taxes.  New York is already working
on it.  Other states are following suit.  It's only a matter of time.

Borders can never beat the cost structure of Amazon.  Bricks and
mortar in prime retail locations are hideously expensive, inventory
management is difficult (AMZN has about 30x stock turns of
Borders).... etc.

Borders needs to forget about even trying to compete with Amazon on
price.  If you want cheap books- you go to the cheapest place.
Borders cannot win there.  Borders needs to improve the quality of
physical shopping experience if it is to stand a chance.  People
started going to Starbucks because the felt that is was their type of
place... and willing paid a high premium.  Borders needs to try to
create a place where book lovers go because they simply enjot being
there.  That is their last shot... if they cannot do it, it is lights
out.

Amazon buying Borders? Ha!  Amazon's success if predicated on
efficiency.  Bricks and mortar would destroy that.  If Amazon even
thinks of a bid- short Amazon.

Borders may go down on Tuesday, as an 80 percent off coupon was
released for their website. Whether this was an awful screw up or
marketing scheme I don't know. However, the website crashed from so
many people trying to order. Either Borders will cancel all of the
orders which would mean a total loss of sales during the time period
in which people were in a craze. Or they will honor orders and
probably lose much more money. Either way they are probably in
trouble. The coupon was posted on various "deal" sites, which have
gotten about a total of at least 80,000 views on this specific topic.
