Borders can never beat the cost structure of Amazon. Bricks and
mortar in prime retail locations are hideously expensive, inventory
management is difficult (AMZN has about 30x stock turns of
Borders).... etc.

Borders needs to forget about even trying to compete with Amazon on
price. If you want cheap books- you go to the cheapest place.

Amazon needs the space as its soon to loose its tax advantages and

Substantive rumor that will be bought by amazon is a very good
possibility . Amazon about to loose there tax advantage and needs to
diversify .

To be fair:
Borders won't rape you on the shipping costs like Amazon.
I had what I thought was a steal at amazon until they started throwing
shipping costs at me. With Borders, it's $25 orders and up, and you
get free shipping. You don't have to pay them anything extra to be a
"SUPER SAVER!" member or crap like that.

Ha. I doubt that very much. Management would not have suspended the
dividend if they had seen dramatically improved earnings on the
horizon.

Really, this is a has-been do-nothing company with a has-been stagnant
stock. Your capital is better deployed elsewhere. No value here.

Borders sucks like stinky fish! I have been trying to place an online
order for 2 days and their system doesn't take the order. I called
cust service and was placed on hold for nearly 30 minutes just now.
When she finally answers, she didn't really know how to use the system
to place my order and took up another 15 minutes to place my order

I guess does BKS want to take on $591.9 million of debt that Borders
has in addition to purchasing the company. Thats a huge amount to
swallow considering they are also losing money but are fine due to
having no debt at the moment.

Everything is questionable because it all depends on BKS. They are the
only suitable company to make such a purchase. Either way, Borders is
a great buy long term.

I think chances are very high.. pershing will be pushing extremely
hard and will get his way. Ackman is not in to lose money on BGP+BN.
The problem is, they will pay a high price, I would imagine over 15,
and for that, they need improving business, which I think will happen,
but will take some time.. maybe 18-24 months.. Even if its 3 years, it

Can they cut costs to match Amazon's prices on the mail order side? I
searched for three books on both sites just now, the prices were equal
for one and Amazon had ~20% cheaper for the other two.

Can't see that ever happening unless they did it online only. Stores
this like are family destinations of sorts. You'd be bringing in a
very different crowd. Playboy is one thing. Hardcore would be a
disaster....IMHO.
