Subject: Extension of first time homebuyer credit
From a Yahoo thread:

"This extension is one of the key pieces of the puzzle for the destiny
of ETFC. This is something that the government is working on this
week, and I am under impression that the extension until April of 2010
seems to be on track for approval. Assuming the extension is approved
- it will allow ETFC to shed real estate secured loans quicker and
will give support to real estate prices. It may also lead to more
upgrades."

upgrades don't seem to be making a difference with this stock, there
are bigger things going on behind the scenes, man I would love to be a
fly on the wall during those conversations

I think over all the impact will be minimal. Its not gonna really stop
people from defaulting, its biggest impact will be helping with the
recovery rates from already forclosed upon houses. I'm not entirely
sure but my assumption is that the 180+ day deliquent loans are just
whats leftover after chargeoffs, its the assumed recovery ammount
they'll get from forclosures. They have close to 1 Billion in that
category. If housing prices continue to decline, that bucket could be
a source of more chargeoffs. If the extention helps boost prices
etrade might be able to recover more than they were expecting and lead
to a modest gain. Either way its probably an insignificant ammount, a
few million dollars.

There is a version of the bill that would also allow non-first time
home buyers to claim the credit.  I suppose you could look at it as
relief for some current homeowners and also for those looking to
unload what they got.

"Senator Isakson, a former real estate broker himself who has become a
leading voice on housing market issues, had introduced his own bill
several weeks ago. That would not only extend the credit for a year
after it's renewed, it would allow all homebuyers, not just first-
timers, to claim it, as long as the property is for a principle
residence. The bill would also increase the tax refund to as much as
$15,000."

There's some good discussion on this at Yahoo
http://messages.finance.yahoo.com/Stocks_(A_to_Z)/Stocks_E/threadview...

What I like is that the person posting understands the makeup of AMTD/
TDBank's interest and potential role.  I also very much like the 3rd
post in the thread bringing a tempering perspective.  Yes, I would
like to know what is going on behind the scenes.  I'll take another
tact here - I've always noted that some institutional banks take a
contrary view of "troubled assets" - American banks, that is.  TDBank
is almost like the proverbial gorilla or elephant in the room.  I wish
I could've seen the TDBank takeover of Commerce (a bank I use).
Regardless, if you read the thread, a possible AMTD/ETFC merger all
really depends on how good they keep a lid on the news - I've always
thought sooner than Q4 2010 (like Q1 or 2 2010) but there is a really
good chance that AMTD is way-further along with TOS integration than
we know and ready to jump in before year end.

My gut is swirling again - many of you remember the last time this
happened (not that my intestinal feelings should be a trusted
gauge) .... I'm sensing a convergence of different things again (the
last time there were real takeover rumors Ameritrade was completing
its merger with TD Waterhouse and it was just prior to ETFC almost
imploding).

Ooooohhhh, last thought - TDBank is the largest single investor/holder
of AMTD (AMTD is NOT a part of TDBank). Sooooooooo, it would only be
worth if for AMTD to buy ALL of ETFC if their largest investor was
willing to BUY from AMTD the banking side that ETFC has POST deal.
Ok, that's my brain dump on a possibility for structuring this deal.
AMTD does NOT want those "troubled assets" but maybe TDBank would buy
them from AMTD.

I think AMTD will write down the bad debt after they buy ETFC if, they
buy ETFC. Who knows but the CEO.

You're missing the point - a company like JPM could buy the whole ball
of wax that is ETFC.  A company like SCHW ... no, they are without the
resources - they don't have enough to do it and neither does AMTD,
unless they act as broker for a deal with their largest shareholder,
TDBank, who would likely see the same value in the mortgage-related
assets that a JPM would find.  C'mon guys, think outside the box.  I
was just reading rronnieboy's "stellar" readers digest summary of the
10Q ... not.  Actually read this stuff to find enough info to be
strategic.  Otherwise you're just here trying to cheerlead for a
stock.  I don't mean to be gruff but I don't hit these chat boards to
just cheerlead - I do it to discuss an investment I decided, like
others, to take a long risk on betting it goes up, as I do w/ all my
trades.

Let's see if the broad markets and this issue get a little kick
