I'm searching and can't find any documentation on why the upgrade was
given. Not that it matters, I bought because of the Goldman upgrade,
but I'll keep looking.

Here is the link to the upgrade.  Hopefully this does the trick,
hopefully ETFC can up towards to $2.00.

If Etrade wanted to fudge the numbers and show a profit they could
easily do that this quarter. 250 mil is about the break even point in
terms of loan loss provisions. Charge offs are only 350 mil and they
are declining. They have 1.2 Billion in total loan loss reserves
already. Meaning if they wanna fudge the numbers and only post 250 mil
in loan loss reserves to make it look like they're breaking even,
they're only taking 100 mil hit to their safety net. They could do
that 12 straight quarters before blowing through all of their
reserves. For those keeping track at home 12*350 = 4.2 Billion in
charge offs they could have over 3 years without making a loss in a
single quarter. So yeah, etrade is going to be profitable very soon.
Maybe not this quarter, but q1 or q210 at the latest. Thats assuming
of course the world doesn't blow up again.

I would rather they not show a profit for now and keep writing off
those bad loans to keep the balance sheet clean as soon as possible.
The faster the bad loans are written off, the higher the stock price
will be, but maybe just take a little longer time. But heck I am in
this for the long term horizon of at least 2-3 years.

There are many ways they could highlight upside DRYSHIPS - that's
what's soooo annoying.  I'm not in the camp that DL will want to go
out on a high note-kinda thing. But that is a possibility (just seems
so damn obvious).  Something has to give ETFC another push.  I was
reading S&Ps report on them and they are using "stabilizing" language
(not going to quote directly - my point is the analysts are starting
to see more stability in the company, despite long plaguing
liabilities).  I definitely believe they will attract more attention
Q1&2 2010.

I'm considering creating a graph showing the history of loan loss
provisions, charge offs, total loans outstanding and total provisions
since the end of 2007, and projections out to 2012. It'll make a great
illustration of the impending dramatic drop off in loan loss
provisioning that is coming soon. I think theres enough data out there
now to make accurate predictions.

Dryships, I would be really interested in seeing that graph.  Also,
does etfc have exposure to commercial real estate loans that many
people are saying is the next shoe to drop?

Please make the graph and cite your sources for the data.  No need to
project any numbers, just let people decide for themselves.

Lol, the exercise is meaningless unless I use it to make projections.
I'd be very happy to hear feed back on the assumptions I will be
making in the determination of those projections. Obviously I can't
hope to be 100% accurate and there will be a very good chance I make a
mistake in one or more of my variable inputs. Overall I hope it to be
a good mental exercise for myself and maybe get some good feed back
from you guys to see what I'm missing. We'll see how it goes, maybe
I'll get it done this weekend.

Then shock the assumptions and create projections under various
scenarios.  It'll show you how sensitive your projections are to your
assumptions.
