Subject: In the Know?
I am starting this thread to try to gather information on Nanogen.  If
you know a lot, have personal experience, or insight into the biotech
field, please post.  Reading the company's descriptions you could get
1990s fever, but how viable are their various product lines.  Please
indicate what your statements are based on.  I bought a decent chunk
of this stock, and surely there are others like me, who want to gain
more insight, and not just hear hype.

I won't worry about the information as much; but you could take a look
at there 'cash in financing'.  I have dreams and sometimes I see
things that other people don't seem to pay attention too.  No secrets
here, just paying close attention like an owl searching prey in the
middle of the night.  All we have to do is wait and see our pocket
change weigh us down from profits.

I've bought and sold this stock since inception. You must read the SEC
filings to really understand its' potential. Many patterns of numerous
types. Frankly, I don't understand the full extent of their value.
However, I do know that Fisher doesn't make to many foolish
investments. What they know about NGEN lead them to purchase about 12%
of all outstanding shares. The other factor of importance, I believe,
sits within the large tax credit available that will expire in 2007,
if not used. This tax credit is the golden egg for someone who has a
profit to apply to it. You can find volumes of info about this in the
SEC filings. Based upon todays volume and prior down vol.I would guess
that something major happened about 1PM today. I purchase a large
block on Feb.20th 2003 @ 1.04 and another large block on 2/05/07 @
1.57. I've seen NGEN near $100. per share many years ago. I'd be
thrilled to see it over $10, again. We'll have to wait a little longer
for the news. Whatever, it might be!   Best Regards to all. Billy

I wonder who is doing the trading to make this jump so much.  Someone
with a good source of Info because obviously from a Goog Fi standpoint
we havent seen news since the 9th.  I bought a good part of my
position Monday at 1.60.  And I held out all week for a dip.  Guess I
might have to settle.  Im with the guy who opened this post, I hope to
see some insightful and informative responses.  Biotechs have seemed
to be gettin a lot of action after DNDN.  I looked thru the available
resources here on GOOG for a cheap biopharm that looked like it might
pop.  This one looked interesting and stable in the least, I havent
dug too deep yet.

Any idea why the price *really* spiked by 0.20/share today on no news
(ignoring the guy who apparently had a schitzophrenic break earlier in
this thread)?   I mean, up is good, but >10% up/down with no reason
makes me really nervous.  The analyst reports are scathingly critical
of NGEN... unless there has been news I missed on a half dozen
research sites?  Is one of the big hedge funds using a couple million
to play volatility games here?

My guess is that a large potential buyer simply decided to take their
stake, buying up many shares, inevitably pushing the price up.

Investing is like a weggie board.  If enough people believe it, then
it starts to move.  Forget about your traditional view on investment
strategies in this market you have to give a long term projection and
most of all believe in your investment not soley on the profits.  Ngen
is a good company doing the right things for the right reasons and
that is something to believe in. Good luck and I'm glad to be part of
it.

NGEN is an improving investment right now, but NOT for ANY of the
reasons you gave.  The traditional view is traditional because it
works, and there is very good reason to invest in profitable
ventures!  The traditional view is PRECISELY the reason why one would
invest in Nanogen; it looks like years of (expensive) research are
finally bearing fruit in marketable products.  Nanogen may very well
turn into a profitable company in the next year or two.  Their
Nanochip 400 system has been approved for use in government labs.
Tests are in development to use it for detecting Alzheimers, Cystic
Fibrosis, and diabetes.  The potential market here is huge, if they
can get these on sale.

mllo..  I can accept that you are (clearly) being paid to say good
things about a company; but, saying *stupid* things about a company
doesn't make it any more appealing, and actually scares away
investors.  You CAN DO BETTER.  Argue on valid grounds, not idiotic
hype.

Here's where you went wrong: stock isn't monopoly money; it's partial
ownership of a company, with all the risks and rewards that entails.
It's easy to lose track of that among all the shifting numbers for
stock prices, but these numbers *DO* connect to tangible things.  If
the business isn't making money, then the stock loses value. If the
company goes bankrupt, then shares are worthless.  That's the simple,
long-term projection.  You might point to the tangible reasons I've
noted, if you're going to try advertising the company; your current
course insults yourself, investors, and whomever is paying you.

Who are Ngen's nearest competitors?  The reason I initially picked
this company is because they are a type of OEM, for an emerging
medical industry.  My assumption is, where this industry may be hurt
by failures in drugs, and products; that NGEN is semi-immune, because
in my opinion in would seem that the "medical R&D " industry will
still need these products.  I feel NGEN isnt exposed to the same risk
as a pharma, etc.  With this industry "booming" or at least a little
hot currently (i.e: CNBC the crawl is full of 10% gainer penny pharma)
this seems like a safe bet to me, in addition the US Govt contract.
When stell cell research becomes more excepted, it will open up alot
of opportunity to this emerging market.  At least this is my theory.
(Lets just hope Mitt Romney remains a joke in the race for pres, his
Mormon values set him against Stem research as far as I know, which is
totally backwards thinking)  Please confirm everything i've stated for
yourself, its been several weeks since i first researched this
company.

My thoughts exactly.  I'd love to have some insight into what spurred
the 10% rally of NGEN today, for example.  Are the rumors flying
regarding the earnings release?  As far as I can tell, there's no news
for a change in valuation  or fundamentals.  Did something happen in
the technicals recently?  Or, is the market just being crazy with the
usual volatility?

Im just looking at the 5yr chart for NGEN.  The current price is
lowest since like 2003.  And arent there positive things going on with
the company also, aswell as in the industry?

I would speculate that this may be a good time to return to old
highs, as one user commented "..it looks like years of (expensive)
research are finally bearing fruit in marketable products.  Nanogen
may very well turn into a profitable company in the next year or
two."  How many investors, and more importantly Institutions see
potential here?

In my opinion, NGEN appears undervalued, based only on the chart and
the current timing.  But of course, I dont read financials and
speculate on anything concrete.  I simply speculate.

My point, maybe the volatility is in fact individuals and Institutions
loading up at this seemingly oppurtune moment in the companies
timeline.  And with alot of these penny pharms popping off like
July4th fireworks, I might gamble this one only needs a really
positive developement to set it off.

Not all spikes are based on fundy's right?  I guess some are hype or
timing or a combination of things.  Just some thoughts...

Wait, was there a factual basis or is it just idle speculation?  Here,
I'll kick it in a more useful direction:  what are your thoughts on
(a)the recent earnings announcements (b)News about the guy removed
from their board of directors and (c)News today that 3 new bioassays
are about ready for market (report reproduced below, it's linked from
google finance):

**** Sticking to Schedule, Nanogen To Add Three  ******
Assays to NanoChip 400 Menu Before Year End
[May 15, 2007]
By Justin Petrone

Nanogen's drive into array-based testing signals a shift in strategy.
While the company has invested heavily in developing the NC400
platform, its revenues to date have mostly been driven by RT-PCR
legacy products from several acquisitions. Now the firm is hoping its
R&D expenditures pay off as it looks to internally developed products
to generate sales.
*************************************************************************** *
My answers to the questions above: (a)Earnings: no really big
surprises, although the claim of 50% revenue growth for '07 vs. '06
seems a bit dubious.  I'd love to see them cut the ballooning "selling
general and administrative" expenses a bit rather than being overly
ambitious in sales.  Still, if they manage to sustain that growth and
their assays are solid, NGEN could start turning a profit in the next
couple of years.
(b)Meh.  Sounds like a foolish mistake on somebody's part, but no
biggie no.
(c)I'm waiting for news from larger sources on this one, and articles
in any of my science journals.  Maybe Nature or Cell will offer a
comparison of AFFX's microarrays vs. NGEN's Nanochip 400?
