You are right, Netflix is pretty new and I think that its stock price
is mostly hype-induced. Everyone is wondering how far this company
will go and how well their business will do. I imagine that they will
gladly take their business global once they get enough capital for
such a movement.

The striking difference is that Blockbuster is based on going to the
store to pick up your movie. The only way they can beat Netflix is if
they are cheaper and offer the same perks as it. Streaming is also an
upcoming idea that Blockbuster has absolutely no channel for at all.
Netflix will soon be competing with cable movie companies as soon as
they offer more streaming content. They have the potential to threaten
HBO.

The switch to Netflix is more of a switch from HBO (which costs more)
to hassling your mailbox. It is slow, but streaming will take over
ultimately.

The technical position of Netflix looks very good -- the increases
were at high volumes, the small corrections were with low volumes...
by the book.
See more details in http://thestocksanalyst.blogspot.com/2009/11/netflix-shows-technical-...
, where your feedback/comments are most welcome.

Continuing the previous technical analysis:

Why Sell:
a) The stock price is dropping today, after a two day rally. Maybe
it's a sign to sell.

Why Buy:
1) The stock price is indeed dropping a bit, but in a small volume. I
expect it at the end of the day to be ~85% of the avg. volume, but in
any case significantly smaller than the short rally we witnessed this
week. Technically, this is a bullish sign (the stock is "getting
ready" to build a support level in this price).
2) The fundamental news are still very good to NFLX's future.

What to do?
Good luck with whatever you decide.
I still choose the "Buy" alternative: I believe in NFLX's competitive
advantage (fundamental), and the technical opportunity in these new
heights (technical).

Even after a quick ~12% return on my original investment (see below),
I'm glad to say that I'm not selling any of my stocks here.
I still recommend on buying this share today, for a long term, and I'd
love to get your feedback on the reasoning I share below.

Why buy:
1) The recent big leap in the stock price was done with big volume:
about 7.25M, which is 5.5 times larger than the average volume.
2) The stock has exceeded its all times high, which is a very
important technical indicator. Combined with the previous technical
indicator (big volume when doing so), this may have very positive
technical implications on the stock.
3) Possibly more consequences from the conference this weekend (see
below), where NFLX enjoyed huge respect from the research community.
This also means that the core business of NFLX has a sound basis and
the risk is low for increasing competition.
4) Fundamental news (new product/market), as suggested in
http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/provider/providerarticle.aspx?feed=A....
Some would say that these news are already reflected in the recent
leap the stock enjoyed, but then again we got an update/reassurance
in: http://www.seattlepi.com/business/1700ap_us_tec_netflix_playstation.html
that justifies the recent big leap.

Why sell:
a) Maybe some day traders will try to shake the stock? Big leaps tend
to do so.
b) When the market/analysts get too excited about big deals (with
Sony), even the slightest shadow on the deal can be used by short
traders to frighten the excited audience. In other words, there's
again a risk that we face some shaking of the stock this week (again,
this mostly affects directly the day traders).

Will appreciate any feedback on this, thanks.

Not a hater or pumper, just an individual investor. My money is blind
to all that BS. I don't invest on emotion or wishful thinking. I don't
listen to anyone, I listen to everybody.
Netflix's dvd by mail will go down in history as a "one hit wonder"
I'm out, too many others that are going somewhere. Lots of
competition.
10 million subscribers big friking deal. Nobody has heard of netflix
still, out of the 8 billion people
worldwide. (Blockbuster is in 20 + countries) SIRI XM - paid radio
nobody has heard of & they have 20 million subs! Paid radio!
It's a drop in the bucket.
Reality, DD & common sense told me to get out.
Blockbuster is known by everyone & will always be known as the company
that helped Hollywood what it is today.
Everyone knows BLOCKBUSTER, & 7-Eleven too.
It's just a matter of what goes up must come down.
Oh also, Redbox (coinstar) is a converted soda machine that pissed of
the industry too.
Long live Amazon, Microsoft,Intel, Blockbuster, Siri, Mesa...
One more thing, did Blockbuster & VCI hook up & make a deal out in
arizona recently?...
I'm a machine opperator at VCI.
Do your homework folks.
Losing money sucks I imagine, waking up in the morning, turning on
your computer
to find out your investment went south.
But then again, if it were not for stupid/ignorant people, the world
wouldn't work.
It is what it is.

Netflix recommendation solution has received a lot of attention
recently, and this weekend -- especially today -- it is expected to
get extra attention due to ACM's Recommender Systems 2009 conference.
Quoting from ACM's homepage at http://recsys.acm.org/:
""RecSys'09 News
New panel: “What did we learn from the Netflix Prize? Perspectives
from some of the leading contestants” on Thursday, organized by Jon
Sanders from Netflix.""

This has implications on the company's technology position. Netflix is
more and more considered as the technological leader in its field.

Disclosure: I bought their shares yesterday at $48.9 a share.

Subject: Re: Question - Wny does Netflix have an inverse relation with the market?
My theory is that Netflix is kind of in a counter cyclical business.

When the market is up and times are good people have more disposable
income and see more movies in the theater, go out for dinner and
entertainment, etc. When times are bad or recessionary people tend to
stay at home, eat at home, etc. But people still want entertainment.
So services like Netflix become more attractive and mainstream. Plus
the very fact that it is delivered is important. There is gas and fuel
savings.

Now the other thing about this, is that I don't believe people are
explicitly economical in their thinking. Meaning that they don't
produce a chart and map the marginal cost of netflix vs a dinner and a
movie. But subconsciously it is there in the habits and behaviors and
so Netflix like businesses seem to express a certain degree of counter
cyclical behavior.

The interesting question is will people who joined netflix during
recessionary times start canceling accounts when the economy and
market improves? Perhaps, perhaps not.
