Browsing Google's income statement. What is covered by cost of
revenue? Software development? Hardware maintenance and upgrades? And
what is the difference between CoR and R&D for almost purely software
companies like Google?

There are many components to cost of revenue (check out the investor
relations site...and then go to the press release
http://investor.google.com/releases/2006Q4.html and the slide from the
CC) the biggest is TAC (about $900M in Q4); salaries foo everyone not
in R&D or Sales, Adminstrative; then things as mundance as electricity
to power servers.....R&D is purely for non-sustaining activities i.e.
new products (software) and new hardware (GOOG designs and bulds their
own server) and probably strategic marketing....hope this helps.
