Subject: E85 at Wal-Mart gas stations? Status?
It has been reported that Wal-Mart considered putting in E85 at there
383 gas stations throughout the US -

Anyone know if they are going forward with this?

Wellll.  Murphy oil is actually the gas station at wal-mart stores.
They are seperate companies, but have very tight contracts.  The only
murphy stations I've ever heard of are on wal mart lots, and they have
a low price pressure by wal mart and are 99.99% of the time the
cheapest stations around.  That said, I heard today that murphy is
supposed to be going to e10 here in arkansas (home of both companies)
and in other states like florida.  I think that they see a safe price
advantage there and are using it to help thier low price positions.  I
have also heard that they are waiting for more reassurance that the
supply for 380 + stations selling e85 is there.  I am almost positive
that they are wanting to be the pioneers of large scale e85.  They are
constantly talking about it, attending ethanol meetings, and have lots
of research (financial) going on.  As many of you may know, WM is
making may efforts to go green.  There have been may articles here in
the local papers about different strategis and technologies they are
researching and implementing; not because it's good, but because it
saves them tons of money.  I am almost positive that once they have
reason to believe that e85 has a secure cost advantage they will start
to implement region by region like they are doing with e10.  They have
to be careful because the smallest storage issue could turn into huge
disasters, so being the first to take this risk on a large scale is
pretty risky.  All in all, they have said they want to be in, they are
just waiting for teh right time and they want to make sure they get
everything right....if they don't they could end up with tons of bad
fuel, private, state and other lawsuits, and a potential overhaul of
already modified storage and pumps.  I give them a year to 18 mo.,
they've talked about it too much and are making it more public than
many other of their "green" pursuits, but they will be the first large
scale...just watch.
