Just read a Chinese article saying that the company closed 77
pharmacies in 2009! Also read that the company has a strategy that
focus on selling the company's own brands and that this is hurting
sales since many customers prefer a wider range of products to choose
from. Was considering buying, but opting out.

Not a lot of people are willing to sell NPD.
The average daily volume of 135k is very small compared to the total
of 100mln stocks that are outstanding.
Because of the low daily volume I think that the current stock price
does not reflect the real value of the company.
You can notice that everytime volume go up, stock price go up.

You are correct. They have 0 debt and $2.75 per share in cash which
can be thought of more ar less as an absolute bottom rather than 0. I
own a small position myself (400 shares) but won't be buying any more.

One problem with basing your investment on the implacations of "0
debt" is that they rent (don't own their stores) and it looks like

With as much money on hand as they have, coupled with little (no?)
debt, $4.75 seemed like a decent place to start. I can't really see
it going down to far from here, but the upside looks tremendous. Of
course I'm a complete neophyte to stocks so we'll see.

Let me micro-analyze :)

We are now 2 month in the second quarter. So the management has a
pretty good view of the performance of the second quarter. And they
expressed this with 'We believe the worst is already behind us and
look forward to recovery in the balance of the year'. Meaning, the
performance of the stores in April and May are good.

But some how we do not have clarity...also I do know that Goldman
Sachs is one of the largest Ins. Invest. in this company.
Couple of quarters ago...during the earning confernce call I asked NPD
if they own the real estate (stores), at that time thye told me that
95 % of the stiores are rented.

The Chinese drugstore as painted by dennisluu is just not
representative in general. There are some Mom-and-Pop drugstores which
may fit that picture. But there are also a lot more professionally run
ones with very extensive assortment of OTC drugs, prescription drugs

If you ever visited any Chinese drug store it is definitely not the
same as a Walgreen. It is more like a drugstore in Mexico with few
items such as fake sunglasses, slippers, disposable toothbrush.. So
the likelihood of this type of business ever becoming Walgreen of

Nepstar has discontinued providing forecasts. I think this is not a
very good move as drugstore should have stable and forecastable
business. Is there something we don't know?

I'm pretty certain this stock will not pay off. Profit will be
reinvested into buying more and more stores. This chain is intended
to set up a supply chain for the drug industry. Not to make investors

i have spent some time in Mainland China (Southern part) and the
stores as Nepstar are fairly small footage, i would say vary between
1200 to 2200 sq ft.

"aggregate of 30,000,000". You'll see how GS bought 30 million shares
of NPD for $15 million. Thats an average of $0.5 per share.
