hadn't realized how pitifully powerless the fed was all this time
what was all that "off you go to the slammer" if you don't pay your
taxes talk?

Here is a good one
Did you know that giving the poor the middle's money was actually a
career?

http://money.cnn.com/2008/03/31/news/economy/copes/index.htm?cnn=yes

apparantely the only reason they wanted credit ratings was to make
sure they only gave loans to the poorest credit risks

Oh, so I thought capitalism was all about risk management and fear of
failure.  Well, why should investment banks have any fear?  We can
just give them the money we were putting aside for my great-great-
great-great-grandchildren's PELL grant.

I am sure the federal goverment will do as fine a job on regulating
investment banks and managed funds as they did protecting us on
9/11/01.

I really can't understand helping out commercial banks, never mind
investment banks.
A business has to be allowed to fail.  Investors have to be able to
make and lose money based on good or poor choices.  All these "free
market" people seem to like intervention when it is bailing their ass
out on Bear Stearns.

This is the Paulson "coverup".    The FED had the authority 5 years
ago to regulate Mortgage brokers and the insiders were making too much
money so it looked the other way, That includes Bernencke.   Now
they're trying to make it look like the FED didn't have the authority
too prevent the current debacle.

Nice to see all the analysts on CNBC ripping this BS plan.
Why would you give the Fed more authority? As far as I am concerned
they already have entirely too much.

The FED has botched this on every level.  They are always behind the
curve.  Now they are taking unprecedented steps to bail out investment
banks.

The only bright side is this plan doesn't have a snowball's chance in
hell of getting through Congress.

This is the proverbial "pound of flesh" which the FED has been playing
for...greater regulation and greater control...US on FED control. What
does that mean? It means more frequent Boom-Doom-Gloom cycles..until
everyone is working for free...welcome to the future. Paulson and Bush
were inconsequential all this time. In case you hadn't noticed, they
have not been able to do anything all this while other than throwing
away a $150 billion or so...

I am surprised Bush hasn't announced a new tax cut yet.  What good is
a Social Security Trust fund when you can give Americans $600 checks!

actualy the most recent subprime nonsense goes back to 1997 and then
the Kajorski and the congressman from ohio got a law passed that
overuled states ability to limit "predatory" lending ("The Fair
Lending Act")
iow: they knew the problem they were trying to cause was working as
far back as 2000
now they are pretending to fix a problem they actually wanted to
cause  (not)

google something the Roman senate did a while ago called the "Cataline
conspiracy" to see how history is repeating itself
then it was grain (which was money) and loans

empires don't really fall
empires are outsourced

A few good scares, and it will sail through Congress. That is how
major unpopular bad legislation is passed.  Congressmen are sheep and
senators are gay.

Few in Bear Stern's got hurt. They got their ill-deserved bonuses and
will find new homes.  When parasites kill their host, they find new
hosts to invade.

My kind of regulation is disclosure.  Let them post on the internet
the details of all the terms and collateral (and whatever) any
derivitive that they own.

We all knew this was a bubble. And, somewhat like Zela said, fear of
the consequences of failure drives unperverted human nature.

We have lots of other bubbles: credit card debt (totally
uncollateralized) and debt to foreigners.

Let me give you a tip better than a TIP: I-bonds.

Obviously ordinary shareholders do not like this, regulation cannot be
liked by markets or i-bankers..I thought the markets will hammer this
move and we will see a decline. Which did not happen. Then it struck
me, PPT, printing presses etc.. can actually make it seem that the
market is celebrating the move to make FED supreme, more important
than the President!!

Long Live America! and Long Live FED!!

That's because they're not really free market people.  These people
are giving a horrendous name to neo / classical economics.  They're
paying it lip service, and not following it one iota.

Jim Rogers called it.  It's Rich Peoples socialism.

I don't get it, the FED has always tried playing the passive
aggressive big brother, now it's trying to take control. M1, M2, M3,
what's next? What is worse for that matter, longer recession, or
worthless dollar that's tied to the red-superpower on the east coast?
