The company was not at 80$ book value, it was at 80$ market value.
The book value is most lilkely not even known to them, because they have no way to value all of the MBS's that they keep writing off. As far as liquidity, it is quite possible that the "run on the bank" last week has had devistating consequences and not manipulation from the top.
